The Tagore Project

Rabindranath Tagore was a poet, a playwright, a songwriter and an artist, the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for literature and the only person to have written the national anthems of two countries. Most people of Bengali origin could sing you at least one of his songs, which like his literature use a poetic but everyday form of language that cuts to the heart of everyday emotion. Commissioning new settings of his songs for choir and orchestra, Anita Datta is artistic director of a large-scale community project to build a bridge between South Asian minority communities and other mainstream communities already involved in choral and orchestral music. In partnership with The Manchester Camerata and the Indian Arts Organisation Moksha, this project was due to take place in The Bridgewater Hall in 2020 and is now being reorganised for 2022.
